a specialized wildlife facility where large outdoor enclosures will allow for physical reconditioning and natural weatherproofing of recuperating birds of prey, also known as raptors. In many cases this "physical therapy" is necessary to provide the birds with a more realistic chance of survival once released to the wild.
Using traditional falconry techniques, The Avian Reconditioning Center (ARC) will also prepare and pre-release train young orphaned and/or injured raptors to hunt, thereby greatly increasing the odds of their survival in their natural habitat.
Poised at the top of the food chain, raptors are a valuable indicator of the health of our planet. Dedicated to educating the public about the importance of birds of prey, ARC encourages compassion for injured and recovering raptors and provides informative programs featuring live hawks, falcons, kites and owls for audiences of all ages in the Central Florida area. Inquiries about ARC's programs to increase awareness about Florida's exceptional wildlife and the vital need for habitat protection should be directed to Carol at 407-461-1056.
You can help The Avian Reconditioning Center (ARC) by sponsoring the care of one of their "raptor residents" through the Adopt-a-Bird program. ARC's eight "adoptable" education "ambassadors" are non-releasable because of the nature of their injuries. Your "adoption" donation will help provide food, medicine, veterinary treatment and other necessities such as leather for falconry jesses and special materials for perches and housing enclosures called "mews."
The adoption packet includes a photo and biography of your chosen bird, a personalized adoption certificate and gift card, a species information sheet, and an annual subscription to ARC's quarterly newsletter, Branching Out. Our education-oriented "Bird Buddy" adoption kits also include activity sheets for the kids - great for classrooms and youth groups!
Show that you care...Adopt-a-Bird for yourself or give one as a gift. Adoptions make unique gifts and are a wonderful way to share the message of the importance of saving birds of prey and their natural habitat. Corporate and individual gift certificates are also available and allow the recipient to select the bird of their choice.
Please take a moment to "meet" and learn more about these very special hawks, falcons, kites and owls. Adopt-a-Bird...it's a gift of life!

This is Gulliver, our Great Horned Owl, and a 6 day old owlet that she is fostering. The photo was taken on February 22nd. She has 2 young owlets she is raising this spring and they have each been eating 8 to 10 mice a day for several weeks now. They are almost full grown. Soon they will be moved on to a larger flight mew where they can practice flying and grow stronger.
Three orphaned Barn Owlets who were raised by Whooie. These were released in February and are still being spotted on a regular basis - success!!
|
An adult Cooper's Hawk that was reconditioned in one of ARC's flight cages. These cages, also known as "mews", are constructed from wood to prevent feather damage.
"Rat" is an orphaned Cooper's Hawk that received training at The Avian Reconditioning Center this spring. A very good "student," this beautiful hawk is now living in the wild.
